the day had a truly coolbeans radio performance/ interview last night. we performed our first single 'wherever you may run' and a brand new, as
yet, unperformed song called 'self harm bible' acoustically to give a
total across the years flavour of our band.
we also had loadsa fun being interviewed and need to thank expess fm and everyone that tuned in and gave us great feedback today :-*
we'll have at least one of the songs up on our myspace soonest, please checkout the gallery for some pictorial evidence.
yes, ade does deserve his own show but we're not convinced 'unperformed' is a word :-\
[31-10-07]: day on the air
the day have been invited onto portsmouth's express fm to perform a
coupla acoustic songs between 8 and 10 on wednesday 21st. november. loadsa interview banter as well.
we are the guests of chris from the station's 'guestlist' programme.
localish punters can tune in on 93.7fm but the beauty is universe-wide punters can log onto www.expressfm.com for a live feed.
checkout the gigiude for news of a hometown show in december with our
good friends the adamseed.
[18-10-07]: plan of action
sorry for the lack of updates 'til now!
the four of us played our first show back together in gosport,
hampshire, 14th. september, to a very positive reaction.
we'll be confirming more gigs as soon as we book them but for the
remainder of this year they're gonna be our hometown of portsmouth and
surrounding areas.
basically steve doesn't know where he's gonna be dayjob wise so it's
best to stick to what we know we can fulfill. this might not sound very
rock 'n' roll or daylike but needs must (we've all gotta live!) and the
last thing we wanna do is book out of town shows and then have to cancel
for whatever reason.
'tis with heavy heart we cancel our kettering gig with old friends, the
mispelt, but we'll catch up with them in 2008. we really wanna play as
often as possible and all over the shop but timing is of the essense.
the upside of this is that by the time we go nationwide next year (a)
we'll be on fire (b) we'll have ace new material.... we're currenly
writing and rehearsing the dummies guide to self harm....
so we're just waiting for a coupla portsmouth shows tbc @ the nell
gwynne and fawcett inn venues.
also hopefully doing a radio session for a portsmouth station that
hopefully will be accessable worldwide online? again, details to follow
asap....
bare with us, love, the day XxX
[28-08-07]: the day will rise again?
all is not quiet on the red letter day front!
basically at the instigation of chris we've managed to reform the 'everything matters' line-up that ran from november 2001 to july 2005. debate will rage as to what the best day line-up has been (and i'll leave that for others to decide) but i can only say from a personal point of view this period was the best time, creatively and funwise, that i had in my 23 years of being in the band. as the wise daryn said 'stevey marsh and chris are probably the only two people that would get me and ade out of retirement'....
obviouly chris and steve left the day for whatever reasons at the time but both feel they are at a point in their lives, although extremely busy, where they want to be part of us again. 'we can juggle anything. it's only when someone actually doesn't want to it that problems arise' was chris's take. we have no industry agenda or any other agenda apart from that we all agree we wanna play shows and hopefully make records together again.
our first show is supporting our old buddies, adamseed, at the railway inn, gosport, about 15 miles from our home town of portsmouth. please checkout our gigguide and we really hope to see some old friends there and make some new ones!
long live the day! love, ade, from a beautiful sunny eastney, august 2007....
[13-06-07]: new songs finally up on MySpace
we've finally got two songs from our imfamous demo recordings from
february at portsmouth blacksmiths studios up on MySpace.
www.myspace.com/thedaybreak or use the link from our frontpage, checkout the accompanying myspace blog and let us know what you think.
[27-05-07]: valedictory remarks
Just to expand on the previous news items:
Without being too dramatic after a lot of heartache I left Red Letter
Day on the 29th. April.
I don't wanna air dirty washing in public but I also don't wanna play
secret squirrels.
At 46 years of age I know longer want to continually argue or reason
with anyone in the band.
When I'm on my way to rehearsal hoping things will be 'alright' with no
grief it's time to think about myself. When you're younger you choose to put up with it for the 'good of the band'. Consequently I have let things go which has resulted in our recording from February effectively being consigned to the dustbins of history.
This recording was first mentioned on here and on our Myspace in
September and in subsequent Daybreaks, causing me huge embarrassment by
it's non-appearance albeit in demo form on our myspace and on the desks
of promoters, record companies etc.
I wanna stress this is just from my point of view and I'm not having a
pop at anyone. I'm sure others may have a total different version of
events.
Daryn will be taking time out to consider whether to carry on playing.
Lisa and Pablo will definitely continue playing as has Keith, Steve
Hunt, Ray, Wolfie, Chris and Steve Marsh before them.
Me? I've been in The Day 23 years, half my life. Even prior to that
Daryn and I played in a couple of other local Portsmouth bands together,
so as you can imagine it's a huge part of my life, but I would have to
'retire' at some stage....
Also I know nothing else than Red Letter Day and don't want to.
So although I will doing nothing with regard to playing again at the
moment, never say never....
Our ace webmaster, Skif, will be keeping this site going with any Day
releated stuff.
I would also like to say a massive thanks to everyone for the very
touching texts, emails, myspace messages of support I have received
during the last month.
Long Live Red Letter Day, Ade XxX
[14-05-07]: MySpace statement from Ade
"Tis with total sadness that I write this.
Due to insurmountable differences in the band, Red Letter Day are no more….
Consequently the three forthcoming gigs booked are now cancelled which goes totally against 'The Day don't pull gigs' ethos but I'm afraid it's unavoidable.
I have no regrets and have enjoyed the best and worst times of my life with The Day. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.
I have played with and even become friends with my favourite bands. For what it's worth I guess few people can say that!
I've been able to write songs, have them released world-wide and hear them on the radio and other mediums.
Of course I always wanted more and to do the band full-time and consider myself a total failure but it wasn't to be, although not for the want of trying.
But more than that I have played with my best friend, Daryn, all around the UK and Europe for the last 23 years, we even played around in Portsmouth bands prior to The Day.
At the risk of embarrassing him, all that time he's been a rock of common sense and support. Even when I've been totally off the wall for whatever reason.
I truly am not worthy of him.
I would like to thank so many people over the years for making The Day possible and hope to keep this site going to update people on RLD news.
Love, Ade XxX"

great show at havana bar, southsea on friday 2nd. march. thanks to everyone that either put us on, played with us, or grooved along :))
checkout the gig section! we've got a show at the joiners arms, southampton on friday 23rd. march supporting the finest punk 'n' roll band in the world! the vibrators....
we've already got tix for sale at a discounted advance price of £7.00. two more bands on the bill aswell. contact us if you're gonna come.
so we've got the alma arms, portsmouth next friday (16th. march) then within the space of four days shows at the premier venues of both portsmouth and southampton!
we're not in the business of getting ourselves at it but it's exciting times in the day at present!
love, ade, lisa, pablo and the weasel XxX
[22-02-07]: return to the wedge
so our winchester date postponed 'til friday 11th. may and our croydon show seems to have gone feet up as we've heard absolutely nothing regarding a february reschedule....
BUT we've two hometown shows coming up at new venues AND just confirmed is a performance at our beautiful cities premier venue, the wedgewood rooms! for a great charity too! hopefully have wedge tix to sell to our adoring public soonest?
we are currently literally recording 'space junkies, 'little universe and 'skeletons of fortune' in the studio at the time of writing.
it's sounding great.... can't wait for you guys to hear the fruits of our intensive labour :))
[12-02-07]: the day in action 2007
we finally resumed live action on the 2nd. and 4th. february. the barn, portsmouth acoustic show was cool and our debut show at unit 22, southampton was awesome, if we say so ourselves! :)
three brand new songs were played for the first time electrically to a great reception to a healthy sunday buncha enthusiastic punters....
suffice to say we're looking forward to recording these three numbers from 21st. feb. as previously stated, we wanna make this year (and many more to come) total dayaction and the gigs keep coming in. not enough but not through lack of effort on our part.
people may say we're overdoing our hometown but we say life's too short, we wanna up the day profile and get out there! we simply haven't the time to turn opportunities down, we're a BAND for ***** sake :))
'get involved before it's too late' as someone once said....give us a level playing field and we can take this day show anywhere! and we fully intend to....
[08-01-07]:
frog closes as music venue...again
just had call from the promoter at the frog on the front, southsea, to say there's closing down as a music venue.
bad news for the day as our first show of 2007 is now cancelled and bad news for our hometown of portsmouth as another venue springs up for a couple of years, gets a good reputation then goes feet up.
'we've done the frog five times over the last couple of years and have always enjoyed, as has the many punters that made the venue their regular friday night hangout. thanks to nikoli the promoter there for always looking after the day and i'm sure he'll pop up again soon in another venue' was ade's take....
[04-01-07]:
day on telly
zip records have just confirmed that two day tracks will be featured in a forthcoming US TV Network show (A&E).
'beautiful quiet things' from 'everything matters' and 'wherever you may run' our first single, will be featured in episodes 3 and 5 respectively.
the shows are scheduled to be broadcast jan/ feb
[22-12-06]:
the year in review
i seem to remember being here before. as in saying what a strange year the current outgoing year was for the day. well 2006 probably outdid 2005 in the strange stakes! we started 2006 with three class shows booked, croydon, portsmouth and acton. prior to which chris tells me he's leaving the day just as lisa is rehearsed and ready for world domination!
the three shows were total class and we secured the mercurial talents of pablo on guitar who played a killer debut show in july then had a baby, so chris was back for another two equally stunning gigs, west drayton and northampton. two stormers at the end of august then we kinda took a hiatus as lisa was on tour for a coupla weeks with mr. fogg. two class november shows in lymington and portsmouth. the only thing missing from the lymington show was an audience and portmouth was rammed and rockin'. definitely the best show so far for the daryn, pablo, lisa, ade line-up.
unfortunately our kingston show scheduled for 14th. december was postponed ''til february so that's it livewise for the day in 2006. so just eleven shows, not acceptable. no excuses, just reasons. the constant upheaval just when you think you've cracked it....
got a hometown show to look forward to 19th january and we've finally confirmed our recording dates as we go into the studio from 21st. february to record three tracks one of which we'll have up on myspace for general consumption and feedback.
rehearsing and writing some great stuff at the time of writing so i'm totally excited about the prospect of the aforementioned recording. you might have heard this before but i've never felt better about the day. could all turn to dust but it's up to us to MAKE things happen....we're visual/audio napalm live and we NEED to make 2007 a year of loads of get outta town dayaction!!
all the best for the festive season from the day.
ade, rattling the sabre, portsmouth, december 2006....

Eastney cellars show review
The master was back! Red Letter Day's singer Ade Oakley treated us to a night of all of his classic moves, the arms flailing, high kicks into the air and the best intersong banter in town. "I know it's a school night" he teased the audience "but let's get amongst it" and the band stormed into cracking new songs like Raw State and Patrion Saint. Oakley is a consummate conductor of both audience and his lean and rabid band. New guitarist Pablo excelled at the atmospheric openings to classics like Wherever You May Run. Drummer Daryn hit precision beats on Great Wall Of Leicester, an older song brought back into the set at the insistence of bass player Lisa. The Cellars crowd called back the band for an encore, and a quick blast of songs sent everyone home with smiles on their faces.
[04-12-06]:
recording dates confirmed
we've finally sorted out our first recording dates for the daryn, lisa, pablo, ade line-up. we go into the studios on 21st. february with the plan to record three songs. Patron Saint and Rawstate we've been playing at our recent live shows, he third we are the process of choosing and writing. this will at least give us time to polish the songs to recording standard. we will, of course, be putting one up on our myspace site.
[04-12-06]:
anti-nowhere league show postponed
unfortunately our show with the Anti Nowhere League and Lost Cherrees on 14th. December at the Peel in Kingston has been postponed ''til sometime in February. this is due to the ANL playing at the Camden Underworld, London on 8th December which may have aversely affected attendance.

cool banana show review

[07-09-06]:
cool banana etc.
two great shows at the end of august! cool banana, the band that supported us at the barn, portsmouth, have their own evening at the same venue on friday 29th. september. the first date together went so well that cool banana have invited us to play on their special night. likewise the promoter at the gosport show has invited us and adamseed back later in the year. date tbc but we'll try and swing it for a saturday night in december.
we'll also be arranging some recording soonest so people can hear the first fruits of the daryn, lisa, pablo, ade line-up. we'll keep you posted. love, the day xx

pablo, sally and romily
with all the recent hectic day behind the scenes activity i humbly apologise for the delay in informing our friends and adoring public that pablo and sally have a beautiful little girl called romily born 16th august. all at the day are pleased and proud and father, mother and daughter are doing more than cool
[01-09-06]:
review of the day in northampton
I was looking forward to this gig for a while as I hadn't seen my mates Ade and Daryn and Red Letter Day for a while. The Day were in fine form, playing a mixture of old classics and songs from the latest cd, which is very good.
The new female bass player was very good, fitted in well with the rest of the band. A very good set but the only downside for me was no 'Parallel Suburbia', '23:23' or 'More Songs' But apart from that it was great to see The Day again. Paul Gobbey
[29-08-06]:
review of the barn show
Next up was a band that played their first gig at the Barn at the Milton Arms 22 years ago and it seemed their audience from way back then had followed them back tonight, singing along to all their songs. Red Letter Day were one of the first punk Bands in Portsmouth and tonight they played their set entirely acoustically adding something special to their performance. There was something different about this band, maybe a it was their ample charisma that had everyone loving them, take it from me, they’re worth checking out . They finished their set with a song called “Patron Saint” which left the audience wanting more of the lead mans dance moves. Red Letter Day are a superb and energetic Band and got everyone in a really enjoyable mood. Rory Conrad
[02-08-06]:
pablo debut and chris' brief return
our hometown show and ace new slinger pablo's debut on the 14th. july was an ace, rammed event. it was also the debut performance of our brand new song 'patron saint' which went down a storm. particularly pleasing as it was the first song daryn, pablo, lisa and ade had written together.
then it was off to uxbridge and northampton 29th/ 30th. july for two shows featuring chris on guitar as pablo and sally wait for their happy event. we impressed a whole lot of people and yes we do say so ourselves! many thanks to old friends the price and the mispelt for making our weekend possible and just so much fun. and hello and thanks to the new friends we made, chatted to and sold the new album to.
we await news from pablo with baited breath but already have gigs scheduled for 21st. and 24th. august when he returns.
[15-05-06]:
return of Chris, for two nights only
The 4th. of August, or around that time, sees the birth of new Day guitarist Pablo and wife Sally's first baby. To that end The Day have not been looking for gigs just prior to and after that proposed date. What happens? Two class shows are offered to us. With old friends The Price on Saturday 29th. July and The Mispelt on Sunday 30th. Chris has volunteered to take time out from Zuma and fill the breach so we can fulfil these opportunities.
'They're Red Letter Day shows which I just can't do. It's great that Chris is willing to step back in. We'll play two blinders and hopefully get further gigs on the back of them for when I'm back in the frame' was Pablo's positive verdict.
[13-04-06]:
rld pull out of folkestone show
The Day are now unable to play the Lanterns show in Folkestone on August 5th due to personal commitments within the band. They apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment caused.
[11-04-06]:
another new face
The new guitar wrangler. Welcoming Pablo to the Day.
[10-04-06]:
advance gig alert
[30-03-06]:
pablo signs up
The Day's comparative short search for a new guitar player has reached a successful conclusion as Pablo has signed on the dotted line following rehearsal Monday. Pablo has played in a number of bands both in Manchester and The Day's hometown of Portsmouth. He also has a wealth of experience as a sound engineer both live and studio based which could also benefit the band.
The new line up will debut at the Witchwood Tavern, Ashton Under Lyne on Sunday 4th. June, see the gig section.
'Pablo's gonna be a real asset. What we need now is a period of continuity and creativity' was Ade's take on recent events.
[01-03-06]:
a message from ade: the chris years
Two great shows with the new line-up, Croydon and Portsmouth.
But with heavy heart I write that this following Saturday in Acton marks the end of Chris's time in the band.
Chris and Steve joined us in November 2001 on loan from the wonderful Thirst. Such was the success of our first show they agreed to join The Day as their side project. What followed was the best four years bandwise of my life, stunning live shows and our best recorded works to date. Creatively and fun wise it was simply awesome.
They came as a package and I always thought they'd leave as a package but this was not to be as Steve left in June 2005 and Chris remained a positive, driving force in our quest for a replacement.
Chris is many things but in very basic terms is a writer/ singer. The fact that he's also an astonishing guitar player is just one of the many bolt-ons. This made the onstage combination electric, like two lead singers but we never clashed if you get my drift.
So I always knew that with the sad break up of Thirst he would one day be fronting his 'own' band again, although I always stressed that The Day was 'his' band aswell. Now he is fronting the wonderful Zuma, destined for great things....
Time and various other reasons brought Chris to his decision which I totally respect. Sometimes you need to put yer own life first rather than try to keep everyone happy and having a detrimental effect on yourself.
Just to draw a line under it I think of how happy Chris made me as a person whilst he was in the band....
Also I remember where Daryn and I were in 2001. Quite simply Chris took us to a magical place. Daryn, Lisa and myself owe it to Chris's legacy to keep The Day there and move on.
So if anyone know a Rock 'n' Roll Savage with voice of an angel please push them our way :))
Love, Ade xx
[14-02-06]:
punk aid disappointment
News has just reached The Day that we will not be playing this year's Punkaid Festival in April. This despite being assured we were and consequently advertising the event on this website for months now.
"If they didn't want us that's fair enough but why mislead us?" was Ade's take on events. "Also to only find out we're not playing when I received a flyer without us on it is shameful"
"The Day have supported Punkaid since it's inception in 1997 and I for one will continue to do so but this shabby treatment leaves a more than nasty taste"
[31-12-05]:
RLD 2005-2006
2005 has been a totally bizarre year for me and The Day. Just nine shows and two of them acoustic featuring just me and Chris.
BUT we completed recording and released the best album RLD have done to date and played the best gig we've ever done. This is all in my opinion, obviously. Funnily enough the reaction to 'Everything Matters' seems to be you love it or hate it. We've done something right to provoke such contrasting emotions!
Of course there are reasons for the, on the face of it, inactivity. Steve announced his decision to leave in June but to be honest I'd known it was a matter of time since January 2005. Not that I'm knocking Steve. On the contrary, he was with us for four years, three of which were simply awesome, the best of my life Daywise. Could all have ended better but is there ever a right time?
But in late October we finally captured Lisa who's gonna be a great asset to The Day in every sense of the word.
Got some 'home produced' photos already up in the gallery. Full photo session to follow in January.
She's concentrating on learning a set so we can resume live work prior to us doing new stuff, although we have a great song 'Rawstate' in the pipeline.... Our first show is 17th. Feb. checkout the 'gig' section.
So here's hoping to loads of Day gigs in 2006 and meeting loads of new and old friends around the country. Hope everyone's had a great Christmas and all the very best for 2006. Loadsa love and thanks for baring with us, Ade xxxx

john peel day
The Day (Peel session veterans of this fair parish) have been confirmed to take part in Portsmouth's Premier Live Venue the Wedgewood Rooms John Peel Day on Thursday 13th. October.
We play an acoustic set in the venues adjacent bar, the Edge of the Wedge.
Jim from Zuma again helps out on bass as the net tightens on our search for a permanent player.
Copies of our new 'Everything Matters' album available on the night.
Support from Maria Szyrtisz with DJ Spikey Mark spinning some of John's fave raves.
ADDENDUM 04/10/05:
Er, contrary to last item Jim won't be playing the 13th. October.
We reckon it's too tight to learn the accoustic arrangements. Consequently Ade and Chris will be doing the show (lean and mean) although rest assured Daryn will be there and hopefully a few ex-Day players?
[23-08-05]:
bass changes
As Steve has got so much on at the moment he's decided to leave The Day. We'd like to thank him for three great years, some awesome shows and a class album.
Subsequently Jim from Chris's project Zuma will be standing in for our launch show. You may be aware of Jim through our link to 'Chris's solo site'. More news on our new player as soon as an appointment is made!

review of Railway Club show
Reviewed by 'Patsy Pa-a-asty' - an 'ol bird with rising Devonshire blood?.(please read the following with a-a-a-a-accent.)
There's nothing more 'olesome than a good 'elping of subversion at the beginning of the week. I'd reached a point of definate confooosion over the weekend and needed me brain tweekin' so, delighted to spot a hansom ad' in Red Letter Day's mail drop, meandered over to unknown territory to me - the acclaimed a-a-appy Monday club. I was in two minds outside as I recognised the place as a Rail workers' Social and got terrible echoes of playing in bands to meself in social clubs. Luckily - as I was in two minds - one had remained open and so Perce and I ventured in. Blimey - what a nice sample of a south-coast population inside, but 'ow on earth any band could possibly whip up frenzy on a Monday night was to be seen and believed.
What on earth was to appear from behind those velour stage curtains that had seen better days? If it wasn't for musically inclined expectant folk, I might av thought I was about to observe a peep show in Berlin.
That Ade - he ain't deterred by a Monday crowd. He flung himself out in full view with his band in formation around him like charismatic bodyguards ready to serve. I can tell you the show had began and it woke me up from me semi slumber! He add somethin' to say and unlike so many bands I've seen who have a mighty unfortunate discrepancy between words and a-a-actions, RLD are a force to be reckoned with - in their furnace of songs they do what they say and are what they say - consistently. And it got better and better as the fine set spat it's confrontational statements out into a now hypnotised energised floor of punk punters. Tha-a-a-t Chris - he echoed Ade's every word with a nitrous cocktail of intended, free spirited lead waves and stabs. The bass - it was like being confronted by a class 55 diesel loco with eerie dark split- screen driver windows, tearing through a landscape that opened and just let the steel wheels' tonnage roll unquestioned. Chris and Steve's a-a-nds climbed all over their fret boards in highly interrelated sequence. Nothing was out of bounds. Drummer Daryn played like someone you don't get in the way of or interrupt and ask if e'd like a cuppa tea. He made the 'ol stage move, like an army still in march, challenging the limits of a suspension bridge with unmistakable action. I can still feel me rib cage give?
As Ade progressed through a set that don't compromise its standards, me previous confooosion lifted - me Devonshire blood boiled by pure Pompey fuel. Me systematic desensitisation from the trappings of western societal norms evaporated and I felt alive. Me feet were on the ground and as if the sound wasn't good enough on it's own, Ade's bodily movements delivered the message 'ome some more. I've never known a guy who had triple joints, like a floating tripod. At one stage - or should I say - over the whole stage, a high into flight jump ended by 'im plunging his wiry, no waste, torso onto both outstretched legs. The near splits that won presence like a spider, with each foot almost touchin' both Chris and Steve's stompin' feet at opposite sides of the stage, was so spectacular it nigh brought tears to me eyes! This man must 'av trained his balls to invert for battle, like the wheels of a plane taking off for flight.
If that wasn't enough - at exactly the right moment to the catchy pulsating beat and tunes, Ade demonstrated again that what I had seen had been real the first time. He is indeed triple jointed - and proceeded with impressive ease, with a high-kick from floor to above his head that would 'av knocked a rhino or wildebeest clean out.
An 'ol hippy and degenerate ex rockin' biker meself, I some'ow missed the virtues of Punk when it landed on planet earth in scratched torment the first time. Then as the nation entered the 80's, I turned to rock legends to drop out and tune off from the bloody awful music around at that time - (sorry Perce, I know ye've got many an exception in yer fine 'ome archive) - but where video has killed the radio star and all sound rather over mixed and predictable or expressed through growing technological mouths - I craved somethin' live, RAW contagious and unforgettable. Then I found RLD. Me skin startin' to wrinkle 'asn't stopped me from getting a fix whereever they are - cos RLD don't need glamour, capitalism and ponsing about - just a stage and a crowd of informed punters to which they a-a-av earned honestly and 'ard. Wiv all the political hypocrisy, injustice and spin in the world these days, RLD say it how it is. It ain't comfortable, but their music's a comfort to me ears I can tell you and fills me pasty to the brim. They leave me breathless and unhanded?
As I went 'ome with Perce wiv' more of a Friday or Saturday night glow to our Monday evening faces, to me pasties and pots, I thought of the RLD phenomenon and found meself sayin' to Perce as he too was recovering from the unbeatable G force RLD exudes, "…those lads?.What a bunch of sweeties…they're all sweeties - ALL of em!"

we were holding on booking shows until we could book a load to coincide with our album release. with zip records informing us that the scheduled release date is now 9th. august obviously we can't hang around for ever. to that end the day resume live work on monday 18th. july, a hometown show at yet another new portsmouth venue.
the 'happy mondays club' is based at the railway social club, right next to fratton station in portsmouth.
it's a superbly run event with drinks at ridiculously low prices, checkout the gig section.
we can't do too much before then as steve celebrates his marriage to the lovely claire on the 17th. june.
rest assured we will booking as many shows as possible when 'everything matters' hits the streets.

Vanity Project review
Little London, Red Letter Day, Autons. Portsmouth Frog On The Front. 25mar05.
Autons kick into action with an almost electro country number, then go on to deliver a most English sounding set of quirky pop. Programmed beats and keyboards provide a solid backing for the dual guitar attack, one being a sturdy acoustic strum the other providing sheets of ice cold riffs that bounce off the beats. I’m thinking Talking Heads and XTC but with pumped up beats, very sophisticated and very smart. Today is Red Letter Day mainman Ade’s birthday bash and he’s up there giving 110% as usual from the moment ‘Insomnia?cracks you across the face. Great street punk from these veterans of the scene and the two younger members now add a rock backbone to proceedings that really enliven classics such as ?T8?and ‘Nettle? Little London, in rock tradition, take to the stage a little under the influence of several beers. Low slung dirty guitar playing, like Motorhead partying with Turbonegro, gets the ladies down the front and a chance for the front man to take a wander and get some tongue action going while still cranking out the riffs. A drunken bash through ‘I Think We’re Alone Now?with half the crowd on stage providing backing vocals ends a raucous affair in fine style. Grebo

Modern Dance review
Formed in Portsmouth in 1984, RLD are still around, still touring and still recording. They did get, in their time, plenty of radio support, including a John Peel session. This is a release of their second album from 1991. If you’ve not heard this band before but enjoy classic punk, then you are going to like this a lot. On listening, I’m very much reminded of The Clash, who I very much admired, so, all credit there to them for that. There are a number of bonus tracks that includes their contribution to the split album (recorded with Birmingham’s The Sect, and their version of The Clash’s ‘Straight to Hell? Plenty to get your teeth into, and a chance to brush up on your pogoing ?just mind that doorframe! (Liam).

overground compilation
overground records have chosen 'brazilia' to represent the day on their new sampler cd. the cd contains 22 tracks by 22 artists that have had overground releases, including ATV, 999, and flux of pink indians. it's purely a promotion, not for sale release but you MAY be able to obtain a copy from www.overgroundrecords.co.uk.
meanwhile still no release date for the 'what's the alternative' album featuring '4t8', compiled by blacksmiths studios.
[10-03-05]:
punkaid cancelled
the day were yesterday bitterly disappointed to learn that punkaid 2005 had been cancelled. it seems holding the event at pontins, with all the onsite facilities, was proving too expensive for the charity organisation.
'it's not just the loss of a class gig playing to loads of people from all over the uk, it's the loss of a class weekend away' moaned ade.
[14-02-05]:
everything matters part 4.
on talking to our record label, zip records america, 'everything matters' will be a 12 song (all killers, no fillers) release in june/ july time.
this will leave us woth 2 or 3 songs for compilation appearances or class b-sides.
nearer the time we will, of course, be assembling a class bill for a release night special show.
[14-02-05]:
recent shows
well what a couple of class nights in portsmouth.... after so many portsmouth venues closing down or being literally demolished it was a pleasure to play for messclean at the frog on the front, these guys have really got it sussed. we've already been invited back, friday 25th. march, ade's birthday bash.
the wedgewood rooms show was simply awesome. only five songs but we're talking quality not quantity here. insomnia, outside world, english drivel bore, butterfly and wherever you may run were performed with an unrivalled passion.
stevie and chris also reunited with thirst for a one-off headline performance which was both emotional and breathtaking.
it was a chance for people to say goodbye and for daryn and ade to say a public thankyou as without thirst and tony rollinson's involvement three years ago there would be no red letter day....
[10-01-05]:
Asian Quake Appeal
The Day have just returned from completing recording of the 'Everything Matters' album at Reading and have confirmed they'll be taking part in their home town's Asian Quake Appeal at the Wedgewood Rooms on Sunday 6th. February.
'Like most people we've been effected by this and would humbly like to give some small assistance if we can. It certainly puts all of our problems in our own little universe that we complain about into perspective' said Ade.
The Day's own Chris and Stevie will also be re-uniting with their old Thirst band mates for a one-off performance as Portsmouth tries to pull together.
No more details at present but please keep checking the gig section for updates.

Day on MTV USA
MTV in new York has confirmed the placement of a Day track for their show "MADE". The episode will air on 30 December 2004, and the theme will be a girl getting her chance to be in a talent show. The RLD track featured will be 'Nettle'.

punk aid 2005
as you can see from the gig section we're starting to book shows for 2005 for when we finish recording the new album.
we've just been confirmed for punkaid 2005, same venue as last year, hemsby holiday centre, great yarmouth 18th - 20th. march.
we've been promoted to the 1700hrs. slot on saturday 19th. it's all good!!
also already confirmed are the stranglers, the tubes and atv, who we so enjoyed last year.
plenty more to be added but keep checking punkaid.com for updates and booking details.
[22-11-04]:
gigaction 2005
the day have announced their first show for 2005, see gig section.
with the passing of many of our hometown venues (alcatraz, docs, contented pig, air balloon) it's good to see messclean promotions are now putting on gigs at the frog on the front, southsea front.
we'll also have completed our album recording so it will enable us to debut loads of our new material live.
[02-11-04]:
everything matters pt. ?
slight bad vibes in respect that our recording dates for the second half of our new album 'everything matters' have been postponed from december 8th. coz john (engineer and producer at outhouse studios, reading) also plays in his own band who have been offered a show on german tv.
suppose john couldn't really say no!?
anyway, the good news is that with a bit of chris's gentle persuasion john's managed to squeeze us in from january 3rd. so it's not too much of a delay.
we can use the delay for writing/ rehearsing/ artwork designing/ gig getting so we've plenty to keep us busy.
if all goes according to plan the tracks will be (in no particular order): ego, oblivion, beautiful quiet things, sell myself, butterfly, 4t8, nettle, charity, outside world, smokescreen, strangest angels (version), english drivel bore.
keep in touch for release date info!
[27-10-04]:
sadness and respect
i was deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of john peel earlier today.
he stood out on radio 1 as someone who actually LIKED music as opposed to some dj's who just talk about what they did at the weekend or who base a programme around arrogant one upmanship.
john was the first dj to play the day on national radio and we had the honour of recording a session for his show way back in 1986.
i continued to send him every release since, some of which he played, some he didn't.
i met him when he dj'd a night at the portsmouth poly where i nervously presented him with a 'suzie's bombed out tonite' t-shirt.
he asked me when the 'released emotions ep' was to be released and informed his listeners the next day that 'needless to say the t-shirt didn't fit'
i often repeat a quote from my good friend tony rollinson that the clash introduced the world to world music.
on reflection today although i stand by that but the same could be said about john.
many would have found some of the stuff he played unbearable, but he gave us the opportunity to form opinions on stuff we never would have heard.
why do bastards live forever?

singing out
Singing Out is a magazine style book that has just been published by Portsmouth Museums. It's a story of the last 40 years of making music in The Day's hometown told through the eyes of the musicians themselves. There's quotes from Ade all the way through the book detailing how he got together with Daryn, even pre-Day, through forming The Day, playing shows, releasing records etc.
Hometown punters can pick-up a copy for ?.99 from the City Museum in Museum Road and from Ottakers Bookstore in Commercial Road. Out of town punters can ring the Portsmouth Museum on 023-92827261 who will be happy to assist with a mail order service.

We've thoroughly enjoyed playing sporadically around England, our last festival slot in Plymouth being no exception. We'd like to thank Chris (organiser) and the other bands for being so cool to swap slots so we got on at 2300hrs. giving Diesel a fighting chance of staying awake on the way home.
Just when we thought we'd concentrate on recording we get offered a hometown show at the Wedgewood Rooms on 21st. October! Keep checking the gig section for details.

dan damage r.i.p.
Good gig on the Isle Of Wight Friday in very sad circumstances as on Thursday we learned of the death of venue's promoter at the tragically early age of 39. Dan had promoted music on the Island for years and got us our first Island gig back in 1993 at Calverts, Newport.
We then lost contact but got in contact last year when Dan put us on at the Squadron and re-united us with Capo Regime.
Our thoughts are with Dan's family and many friends....
[06-07-04]: more songs...
The cd reissue of our 'More Songs About Love and War' album will be released worldwide on Overground Records 6.9.04. We will be launching it (or re-launching it?) at a hometown gig the next day. 'I'd forgotten how good this album was and, yes, I'll say it myself! All the power, emotion and variety plus nine extra tracks? It's great to see some of our vinyl back catalogue available again with such a class package' is Ade's verdict.

back in action
The Day found themselves in exalted company for their first gig in four months with the Vibrators, Dublin Castle, Camden, London. Not only were The Damned playing the Camden Underworld on the same night, The Cure were playing an 'invited audience' gig at The Monarch, another intimate Camden venue.
'We were a bit concerned all this would adversely affect attendance at our show' said singer Ade, 'but the venue was rammed. A quality show'. UK Subs man Charlie Harper chose the show for his night out as well. Some photos from the night can be seen in the gallery here

AN APOLOGY
We would like to apologise to Blacksmiths Studios in Portsmouth with regard to any inference that the final result of our 'Limo Life' session was in anyway down to them.
The master we received from Blacksmiths was fine, it was after the final manufacturing mastering that things started to sound a little quiet and lifeless.
We will be recording our album at Outhouse Studios, Reading for historical reasons and sometimes it's good to get out of your home town to work.
We have a v.good relationship with Blacksmiths who provide an excellent local and national service to all types of bands.
Check them out at www.oldblacksmiths.com
Sorry for any offence caused.
[18-01-04]:
don't just take our word for it (please!)
After we received our copies of the 'Brand New Rage' UK Sub's tribute, the band were a little disappointed with our version of 'Limo Life' production wise. No excuse, we played it! Having said that we have already had the following cool reviews:
Bands such as Red Letter Day, Jakkpot, Trashcan Darlings, Charge 69 and Bastard Squad do the songs very well and are a credit to this release. JAK
The Limo life version by Red Letter Day particularly pleases me. Scarred For Life
Enjoyed it so much better than the Day's 1992 version. www.uksubs.com
We've decided that our forthcoming album will definitely be recorded at Outhouse Studios, Reading. They don't know it yet but that's the way it's gonna be! Meanwhile we look forward to rehearsals and our March shows.

don't just take our word for it
Here's a review of the 'Twenty Years Of The Day' show by Jem Rudge:
Wednesday night at the Wedgewood rooms and Second on stage Red Letter Day were raring to go, Introduced by a fanfare played by their very own drummer, Daryn. This led into their first song of the night, an old favourite ‘Wherever you may run? it is good to see that The Day still play their old classics as well as their new material. Speaking of new material, ‘Nettle? The Day’s latest single, was third to be played, sounding as good as ever and showing off their new talents. The Day also played ‘Ramraid?another song from their latest single, dedicated to Wolfie and Razor, ex-members of The Day.
Other songs played during the night included ‘Last night? a rarity to hear this song live, such a good song yet it isn’t played often enough, ‘Drama Queen? another brilliant older song, and a few newer songs ‘Ego? ‘Butterfly?and ‘Oblivion?which all sounded amazing. They are a bit of a change for The Day, but that’s not a bad thing. Not every change is good, but in this case it works, as long as The Day don’t forget their roots, and still play their original songs they will keep their present fans and gain a lot more.
All in all a brilliant night for Red Letter Day, great songs and catchy tunes, and as always the unforgettable sight of Ade’s individualistic and eccentric dancing. So if there is going to be a Red Letter Day gig near you why not go, you’ll probably have a great time, oh and don’t forget to go say hi to the boys, and congratulate them on the news of the immanent arrival of the newest member, Ade’s baby!.

days off
Our two November shows were a resounding success at Winchester and
Portsmouth. The Portsmouth performance was recorded and depending on the
results a couple of tracks may see the light of day as bonus track's on the

Saturday 27th. March. Also playing on our day are The Damned and our
friends The Mispelt. Check out our punkaid link for more details.

The Day have two shows at top south of England venues in September. Thursday 11th finds the band at the Joiners Arms, Southampton (support for this show would be greatly appreciated as future opportunities may depend on it) and on Saturday 13th, the Day are at the Royal Squadron, Ryde, on the Isle of Wight. Steven is away on holiday for the Royal Squadron show so Thirst's charismatic guitarist, Tim, will be on bass for a one night only production!
Two more gigs follow in November. Sunday 9th sees the boys at the Railway, Winchester and later in that month The Day will play a hometown show at Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms with the Vibrators, date tba.
The Vibes show will be Red Letter Day's last show of 2003 as Ade has his own release scheduled for January 2004 in the shape of a baby with his girlfriend, Ju-Ju. This obviously will not prevent the band writing and rehearsing for their forthcoming album to be recorded Spring 2004. Please click on our gig section for more information.

[15-9-02]: punk aid cancelled
Red Letter Day were due to play this year but sadly the whole events has been cancelled. Their reasons are detailed below - the info has been taken from the punkaid site www.punkaid.surf3.net
It is with deep regret that we have to announce the following. We have decided that we will not be hosting a PUNK AID festival at the Ocean, Hackney this year after all.
As many of you would have seen on both Punk and Oi and the Punk Aid sites we have had many problems with this years event, not through lack of interest but one of schedules etc. This year's event had also been sponsored but due to the time restraints they have decided to withdraw but they have given us their wholehearted support for next year. This to us was too much to bear at this late stage and with time running out we felt that there was too much to lose.
However, this decision was not based on that alone as many of you are aware this year has been an accept ional year for Punk activity with come back shows and the Sex Pistols show. But one thing that we have taken on board is the aftermath that of HITS and the Sex Pistols shows. We feel that there has been a Punk overload and the mere fact that the Pistols concert for all its publicity and pointless TV appearances was a total washout with only half the tickets being sold on the day. We have taken into account all the factors that we normally do year in year out, but this year more than ever. Punk Aid has grown naturally and this year with the release of the album Punk Aid has achieved a lot in its short time.
We have decided that Punk has been sapped to death this year and with that in mind we feel that people can only give so much and to host a festival without the support of sponsors that we would have needed at this late stage would be suicidal.
As many of you should know we do what we do because we believe in it and as such so do the workers and artists who perform. As such all the monies that we raise and the little funding we get is not ours to gamble with and at this stage to carry on with an event would be just that.
We have decided that PUNK AID festival will have a rest until next year thus also giving 'PUNK' a rest. It is our intention to host the usual Festival out of London but during the spring period, we are also looking to do a small party event this Xmas.
We hope all our supporters both here and abroad fully appreciate our position on this and that of the decision that we have made. We want Punk Aid to run and run and we will not do anything that will jeopardise its reputation, so we look forward to seeing you next year and maybe at Xmas
[29-4-02]: nettle coming soon
the new RLD line up enter the old blacksmiths studio, portsmouth, on may 25th and 26th to record "nettle", "ramraid" and "make a choice" for a future single release. this may see the light of day on zip records. the session will be produced by chris and steve's former thirst colleague richard tamblyn.

issue 37 of the long running southampton fanzine suspect device was issued with a free cd, "knowledge is power", featuring the day's "autoerotica" which was to have been one of the b-sides to our next single release on zip records and is the last release by the daryn, ade, ray, wolfie line-up. contact suspect device at po box 295, southampton, so17 1lw.
in other news, the day have just returned from three dates in the north-east playing three well attended shows with the vibrators in newcastle, sunderland and hartlepool. sunderland, especially, was just one of those magical nights. the band thank
the vibes and cathy from distortion for organising the gigs.

north eastern tickle announced. the shows, all supporting the vibrators are as follows: 6.2.02 trillions, newcastle; 7.2.02 sinatras, sunderland; 8.2.02 the studio, hartlepool.
basically our big news is that chris perrin and steve marsh have joined the day as a side project to thirst. this is as permanent as anything is in life. obviously if it becomes too much they'll have to reconsider.
ade also supplied the following quotes:
"daryn and i decided after the air balloon gig that we'd rather do say twenty
gigs a year with these guys than one hundred with other people"
"without been patronising to chris and steve or disrespectful to people that
have been kind enough to enquire about the vacancies, it would have been a bit
after the lord mayor's show"
"It means I'll have to work very closely with the thirst management and make our gigs real events"
"i sincerely want thirst to be the biggest band in the world but even then I'm sure they'll have a few days off!!"
"i just hope the boys are available for my birthday bash on the 26th march as it's almost become an annual event"
[25-11-01]: ...and then there were two
in the first major personnel change within red letter day for nine years, razor and wolfie have decided to leave red letter day to pursue a new musical project, taking some of razors songs such as "thrown it all away" with them. this sadly means there will be no new single in the near future. for the christmas show at the air balloon and a possible mini-tour of the north-east (both with the vibrators), chris perrin and steve marsh of old friends thirst have been drafted in to fill the vacant positions.
